Brief info
on the original STARR Army Revolver .44
|
American Starr 1856 Patent single
action Army Revolver in .44 calibre. Starr produced double action revolvers used
in the American Civil War
Full framed revolver with an ingenious two stage trigger mechanism. The
conventional trigger cocks the hammer and positions the cylinder then at the
last moment the main trigger acts upon a second trigger which releases the
hammer. When correctly adjusted the pull and brake can be timed to feel like
one simultaneous smooth movement.
The second interesting feature of these robust Starr Army models is the opening
frame. A single turn-screw on the right just forward of the hammer, when
removed will allow the frame to tip forward so exposing the cylinder completely
and enabling it to be quickly and easily removed, at that point a loaded extra
cylinder could be inserted and the revolver closed, screw replaced and the
weapon would once again be ready for use.
In double action the trigger press operates differently from what we’re used to
today. When you press the trigger and the revolver fires, you need to let the
trigger snap back quickly. If you try to work the trigger slowly, the action may
not reset.
